Final Engineering Design Project
Modeling
The goal of my final engineering design project for my BS in Mechanical Engineering was to design a system that could calculate the torque on a shaft attached to a gas turbine. The system we designed used the angular displacement between the ends of the shaft, which was caused by the torque it transmitted across it. To measure this angular displacement our system used optical sensors, an encoded tape, and a microcontroller.
We employed engineering design methodologies including a Pugh chart, a 6-3-5 concept generation session, and a morph matrix.
My final design class took place during a summer semester, so the project was on an accelerated timeline. This project allowed me to bring together many of the engineering techniques and principles taught to me during my time as an engineering undergraduate.
